Extremely forgiving,

Just did a shave with a fresh Big Ben razor. I rate it a 4.5/5 (I give the Feathers a 4/5) Did a WTG, XTG, ATG shave. MRGLO, proraso shaving soap in cup, generic badger bristle brush, nivea moisturizing aftershave balm, alum. unknown razor (i still don't know what it is)
It was a very smooth, very forgiving blade. Somewhat surprising given I did not like the Lords (manufactured by the same company/brand). Was able to achieve a BBS shave with few nicks, though it required slightly more pressure than with a Feather. One of the best blades I've used so far, I think. Where it lacks in sharpness, it makes up for in smoothness and its forgivable nature.

Almost Impossible to Cut Yourself,

Disclaimer: I am new to shaving with a double-sided safety razor. I recently switched from a muli-blade Fusion to a Lord 6 to shape a Stark-esque goatee.
Using the Lord blade that came with the Lord 6 razor, I admit that I nicked myself often. But, with the Big Ben it's almost impossible to nick or cut yourself. Using the Big Ben, you can go at angles, you probably shouldn't with other blades and you won't get cut. This can be very useful for shaping a goatee.
With a sharper razor, if you move the blade too fast, you can cut yourself. But, with the Big Ben, when you move the blade too fast, it just doesn't cut much. Bottom line, it's not as sharp as other blades out there, but if you go slow, you'll get a decent shave with no cuts. I think Big Ben gives me as good a shave as the sharper Lord blade that came with my Lord 6. Compared to the Lord blade I tested, there's no irritation with the Big Ben.

I found this blade to only fair: the edge is not as fine as edges on Gillette's 7 o'clock series 100 7 O'clock Double Edge Safety Razor Blades SUPER PLATINUM (about $25/hundred)or Astra's Superior Premium Platinum blades (about $10/hundred--an excellent buy)100 Astra Superior Premium Platinum Double Edge Safety Razor Blades. I found the blade delivered a harsh shave, the blade had a rough feel, and I felt pulling rather than shearing one-day stubble. I cannot recommend them and would only use them if the only other available blade were those horrible Dorco blades...Read more
