Unfortunately, most current straight razor users don't seem to use Dovo Red & Black pastes much, preferring much more expensive hones. So, the instructional details are usually missing from the threads in my opinion. Not knowing whether I would stick with straight razor shaving, I ordered Dovo Red & Black, and learned by the seat of my pants how to use them. They work fine.
Straight razor sharpening is difficult to master. And, following the usual routes (a variety of hones) can be expensive. What follows is a poor man's version of straight razor sharpening that works fine, and produces a quality shave ready edge. I had been using the green chromium oxide on a leather sheet glued to a solid piece of wood which I clamped in my workbench vise. I got this wood block-leather strop setup on Amazon, from some woodsmithing supply shop, sorry I can't remember their name. My razor was doing fine, but I felt that it needed just a little keener edge than just the green chromium oxide was providing, so I got the Dovo red-and-black combo. Not wanting to go too far all at once, I just tried the black component first. My strop is a two-piece, with a double sided canvas section, so I disconnected that and slathered it with the black compound. Am I glad I did that - this stuff is black, greasy, messy, and you'll want to keep it in your garage in a plastic bag when you're done.
