I purchased the Merkur Long Handle shaver in May 2011, I am writing this review in October 2011. I was very happy as a first time shaver with a double edge razor. The Merkur seemed to work well. This past week I unscrewed the handle to change the blade and the handle came apart under the head of the razor. The top of the handle that screws into the top cracked and came off of the handle. I was unable to get the top separated and remove or change the blade. I will be ordering another double edge razor as I did enjoy the shave much more than the electric's or disposable's I have always used in the past. I don't know if I would order another of this model as I had hoped that it would be a much less expensive way to shave. However spending the money for the razor and only having it last 5 months, didn't accomplish that.

Amazing shave! Textured grip doesn't slip in your hand. Shave angle feels very intuitive. Nice, balanced weight. Never had such a smooth shave. Love it.

So much better than a plastic Gillette. It's very solidly built, so the razor is aligned tightly on the edge. The sampler pack of blades is great, they all have a different feel and it's great to be able to compare them with each other.
