I've shaved with electric and disposable razors for decades. I have recently used the 3 and 4 blade wonders for as long as they've been out. I've never been satisified with them. Hard to clean, seem to dull fast.

I recall my dad had a similar razor to this Merkur when I was a kid. I decided to buy it and give it a try. Wow, what a difference. Close shave first time. Didn't have to go back over areas, it was a BREEZE to clean! Keeping the blad clean and dry seems to be a cinche with this. You have to shave a LOT slower and take your time. I'll have to get used to that. But, amazing.

About this model in particular. After all these years using the 3 and 4 blade models, I've been used to longer handles. This has a shorter handle. It has a good feel, nice weight to it, but my next razor like this will be the long handle. The models I remember my dad using had a twist release on the bottom of the handle. These are the "butterfly open" razors. This is...Read more

Hey, what can I say? Merkur Classic D.E. razor is just that..A CLASSIC! If you are new to double edge razors "wet shaving" consider this but in the HD version (heavier). You can view everything you need to know by visiting youtube and by searching "wet shaving". Their you will find many good informational videos on this subject. One of my favorite posters is a guy named mantic59. Once you learn, and practice this lost art, you will find that these razors are the absolute best for your skin, beard reduction and pocket book. With the avg 5 blade disposable costing about 3-$5 dollars, you will be pleased to discover that not only does this razor give a better-more comfortable shave, but it will cost you about $.50 cents per week on blades. Lots of blade options (buy online or WalMart) Feather, crystal, Derby etc, etc. Hey, and don't forget the shave brush and cream..lots of good stuff. Men should/need to shave every day..so why not have fun and enjoy it?

5.0 out of 5 stars First razor - very happy, June 19, 2011
Joe_L (New Jersey, USA) - See all my reviews
I've used disposable razors for years - the cheapest single blades I could find. I bought this figuring at the very least I would save money shaving (over the long run!). I was very happy to see that there was no real learning curve, and the shave was very close. I use Barbasol (again, cheap) and prepare the same way for shaving using this as I used to with the disposable - lather up and shave. The razor came with one Mercur blade, and I learned very quickly that it's really the blade and not the device that counts. My first replacement blade (a no-name) was terrible - pulling out rather than cutting my hair. I'm still exploring blades (was pleased with Shopright's brand). One nice thing about this razor compared with single blade cheapies is that there is plenty of space between the blade and device - rinsing hair out is much easier after each stroke. Shaving 2 or 3 days growth is no worse than one day's - much better than with a cheap disposable. Finally, shaving is more fun...Read more
