My background:
I used a Gillette Sensor. It was okay. I upgraded to Sensor XL. It was pretty good. I tried a Mach 3, and I hated it -- it felt like I was wiping my face with a wall of blades. I finally settled on Sensor 3 -- at nearly 2 bucks a blade. It got the job done, but there was no real joy in shaving. Considering I have to do it at least once a day (twice if I'm going out at night) the process should be more enjoyable.
After quite a bit of research, including newsgroups and customer reviews, I splurged and got the Merkur Futur.
Shaving is awesome, and I literally look forward to it. Lathering up the shave cream (I use Crabtree and Evelyn Sandlewood) with this brush is a real treat. Super soft, holds a ton of water, and results in a thick lather. (Be warned, the first few times you use it, it stinks like wet badger... but it goes away).
The razor itself is heavy... I mean heavy. Which is good, because you need to let the razor do the...Read more

I purchased this shaving set without any prior experience of wet shaving or shaving with a double edge safety razor and its been a fantastic experience so far.
I used to shave with a Schick Quattro because for whatever reason, that was the only cartridge razor on the market that didn't give me bad razor burn on my neck. I would still get razor burn, but nowhere near the extent of other cartridge razors.
I read about using double edge safety razors as an alternative and how they're supposed to give better, closer shaves using cheap blades with the only caveat being that it takes some practice before you can get a good shave without cutting up your face.
The Merkur Futur has a much larger head that I'm used to shaving with but I adapted to it quickly. It's also pretty heavy, which is good for me because you're supposed to let the weight of the razor do most of the work and I'm used to pushing the razor into my skin a bit. It is adjustable but I...Read more

I was a little afraid to buy this set after reading the reviews about the aggressiveness of this razor and that I would cut myself and that this is not for the beginner. But then I was told by one of the sales people that if I didn't buy this now I would want to get this unit at some point. So I figured if I will have a hard time with the futur razor I would buy a cheaper one until I get better in shaving, but I didn't have to. I took my time in the beginning and now absolutely love this razor. My wife loves the close shave I get. She always comes and kisses and touches my face now after I shave. Never did I come close to a shave like this with the disposable Gillette M3Power or any other disposable blade systems. Don't get me wrong if I was not using the double edge razor now my choice would be the Gillette system. There is a little getting used to the double edge razor shave, but it is soo worth it. It is important to get a good shaving cream. Makes a huge difference. I found...Read more
