Product Review

Merkur's adjustable "Futur" Safety Razor allows you to change the angle of the blade inside the razor head - by twisting the upper part of the handle - to find the setting that gives you the closest, most comfortable shave. With adjustable razors you can re-adjust the angle as needed to maintain the optimum shave. 4 1/4". Chrome plated. Made in Germany.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tried To Love This Razor, March 8, 2012

I purchases this model razor on two occasions, but have not been able to find comfort and joy in shaving with it. After trying to figure out the problem, I think I've got it: to me this razor cuts much the way a cartridge razor shaves stubble. This is the one DE razor that, for me, brings about ingrown hairs and leaves me with some shaving rash. Compared with the Merkur Progress, I find the Progress doesn't lay the groundwork for ingrown hairs and it doesn't rash my skin. So why does the Futur do this?

Near as I can discern, the razor can cut stubble just below the skin, like a cartridge razor such as Gillette's Pro Glide. And when this happens we can get ingrown facial hairs. Not good. I also noticed that this is one of the few safety razors that postions the blade nearly flat against the base of the head. I find this scrapes the skin rather than gliding over ones face.

There are many guys who love this razor because they tell me that it's smooth and they hardly...Read more

What a truly amazing razor. Exceptionally well made. The best money can buy, and far from the most expensive, and I truly mean that!!

I have used The Merkur VISION 2000, the Pils -All Stainless, Merkur 43c, Feather -All Stainless, and a handful of others, and this Merkur Futur is by far my go to shaving implement. I like to collect Safety/DE razors so I own many, and this Razor performs better than safety razors with a $250 price tag and not due to some shiny Mammoth Ivory handle, or a limited edition release or other outrageous things done to ornament a razor, but bare-bones no frills All-Stainless razor... This is better balanced, more ergonomic in the hand, and just plain 'feels' better than a razor nearly for times the price.

The weight is perfect, really helps run through a very thick beard (I dull a fusion cartridge in a single shave believe it or not), but not too heavy that its annoying like the Merkur 43c at 5 and a quarter ounces. The adjust-ability...Read more

I have been shaving with Trac II - type razors for 40 years. I have always had problems with ingrown hairs. Some brands caused more issues than others. For a while in my 20s and 30s, I wore a full beard so as to not have to deal with the nubs and zits. About 20 years ago I settled on the "goatee" look now common in my area, went back to the double blades, and everything was more or less ok for a while. Lately, it seemed any brand I bought - including some vintage finds - gave me nasty ingrown hair issues.

A couple of years ago I had begun using a shaving brush that had belonged to my grandfather. It wasn't a very good one (Gramps was a farmer)and it was well worn. But I liked the effect and soon bought a Vulfix. Since I was basically already halfway to shaving like my grandfather I decided to try a safety razor and see if it addressed my facial problems. After much research (and watching more than a few You Tube videos) I settled on the Futur and a pack of Feather...Read more
