Good and cheap,

This is one nice razor, and I've owned several so I base this review on some experience. Unscrew the base and put in another blade, very simple and the razor is sturdy. This is the long handled version, but it isn't the lightest weight safety razor out there. I prefer a little heft, as you let the weight of the razor do the shaving, you don't press it into your skin, as you sometimes have to do with a cartridge. I really like the adjustable feature, as I can set it on three for a one day old beard, but on five for that four day old stubble. The adjustment makes a great difference with this razor. Crank it up and you get a very aggressive shave. Start out on one and work your way up. READ ON ONLY IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN A GREAT SHAVE! Get yourself a good brush and soap. Don't use the goo in a can. There are basically two types of brushes, boar and badger. (I don't like the synthetic brushes) I like boar bristle brushes, especially the Omega Pro, but a drugstore boar bristle will...Read more

Best Shave Ever!,

Well guys, like most of you I abhor shaving, its a tedios chore that although necessary is not my favorite thing to do. Lately I've been going a week or more between shaves because I dislike it so much, and of course that only makes it worse. I've tried electric, cheap Bic single edge razors, high end triple edges, not the five blades though (if three doesn't get it done five won't) and none did an acceptable job. Then I decided to try the safety razor, one like my old man used to use. I ordered a Merkur Long handle Progress razor, got it today, just in time because I need a shave. Along with the razor I ordered all the other essentials for a safety razor shave, blades the shave soap and brush, and some after shave lotion. The razor showed up first, and I thought "great how long will it take to get the other items"? The razor to my delight came with a sample blade, so I thought I'd try some of my canned shave cream and see how it goes.
I put the blade in the safety...Read more

I haven't used an old fashioned safety razor in since I was 15 (30 years). Cartridge razors had done fine for me all of those years, but lately I have been having alot of problems with in-grown whiskers and irritation from shaving. I started looking at alternatives and decided going back to a safety razor was the way to go. I settled on the Merkur Progress Long-Handle based on reviews here and on other sites, and because I wanted an adjustable razor.
The razor is very well made. The chrome finish is flawless and the fit of all the parts is extremely tight. The adjustment mechanism is easy to use and clearly marked. As other reviewers have mentioned, this razor has some weight to it and the long handle fits my hand well. Blade changing is simple and straight forward.
With the razor I also ordered Feather Razor Blades, Pre de Provence Shave Soap, The Art of Shaving Pre-Shave Oil, and Van Der Hagen Men's Luxury Shave Set. Armed with all of this I can say this razor...Read more
