Nice Second Razor,

My first Merkur was a 180 Long Handle model and it's really worked well. However, I've been wanting to try an adjustable and decided on the Progress (long handle) based on price and good reviews.
The first thing that I did was to throw away the blade that came with the razor. The blade that came with my 180 chewed my face up and I've heard others say pretty much the same thing. I wasn't going to go through that again.
I've been using some Merkur blades that I bought seperately and, after trying a few different settings, am very pleased with the results. I've been starting at 3 on the first pass and going down to 1 for the final pass ATG.
Now, I know that I'm no Albert Einstein, but I'm not a dummy. Yet, it took me about 15 minutes to figure out how to open this bleeping razor in order to insert a blade. Those so-called instructions that Merkur supplies are about as good as their free blades.

Is it a razor or a snapping turtle?,

The Progress I received was uncomfortably aggressive even on the lowest setting. Lots of cuts and razor burn. Even worse, the blade cap/holder won't stay put during the shave, causing the blade to snap back and forth. I bought another progress and compared and it's still like a snapping turtle. Bad batch perhaps? I also own a Futur and have much better shaves with it. I just wish my Progress was as sturdy.

I am new (back to being new since about the early 60's) to double edge wet shaving. For some reason I had discarded all of my double edge razors I used in my teens and 20's. This razor is a good buy if you are looking for an adjustable razor. I need to start on the least aggressive setting to get a shave without nicking myself. I would suggest that if you are just starting out, get a non-adjustable razor to start out and one that is not a very aggressive shaver. The Merkur 34 HD or an Edwin Jagger 86 would fall into this category. Once you are more experienced, get this razor and try the different settings. Start out on the lowest setting and work your way up. This is a very well made razor for the money and is a good choice if you want an adjustable razor.
